When you trade stocks online, you are virtually the dealer and also the investor. Hence you not only need to be convinced about the quality of the stock you are investing, the sanctity of the levels but also about the manner in which the order is executed. You need to verify the order book and the trade book to ensure that your trades are executed as per your requirement. You must also ensure that the levels of buying and selling are ratified by technical charts. Above all, you also need to double check with the contract notes on a daily basis to verify your trades.

Key aspects to take care of when you trade online

  • First and foremost ensure safety of your login, user name and password. These are your passport to your trading account and you do not want these to fall into the wrong hands. Ensure that your password is not as plain as your name or your date of birth. Also ensure that you do not write your password anywhere and keep it. That is the key to safety.
  • The hardware needs to be managed properly. Ensure that your machine has an anti-virus and an anti-malware installed in the hardware itself. These need to be updated from time to time and also renewed so that your machine is not exposed to any external technical threats. If your online trading machine becomes too slow, stop trading as the machine could be compromised.
  • Connectivity to the system also matters a lot. Ensure that you have a robust and secure connection that does not get reset. Always access your online trading system from your personal machine and never access the machine from a cyber café. Above all, if you using a smart phone to trade never rely on public wi-fi systems as they are mostly unsecured.
  • Double checking is at the heart of successful online trading. Before you place the order double check the price and quantity. After each order you need to cross check with the order book and the trade book. Above all, ensure that the details of the order place match with the contract note that you download. Also ensure timely demat and bank credits and debits.
  • Maintain a central portfolio manager for all your stocks and possibly other investments in one place. Ensure that your trades are automatically captured in the portfolio manager and see if you can also upload your other holdings so that you have one central repository for all holdings. This enables you to capture your MTM losses and your net worth in one shot.

Three tips to trade online smartly

There are a variety of analytics in your trading terminal that can enable you to take a more informed and intelligent trading decision. Here are a few of them.

  • Your online trading account provides you with certain in-built screeners. Use these screeners to short list stocks based on a variety of criteria. These screeners can help you to identify and narrow down on stocks more intelligently. That is the key.
  • Research is available aplenty, both short term research and investment research. You can at least use these research and trading ideas as a trigger to trade. You can also read the report online and place the order seamlessly. Brokers will offer you seamless execution.
  • Online trading is also about making the best of management information systems. You can review your sectoral allocation, the thematic risk in your portfolio, do a granular analysis of the trades that were profitable and those that were loss making etc. Make the best of it.
